THE HAND OF FORTUNE

A VIDE POCHE WITH AN OPINION

Are you jealous, happy, in love, fickle, silly, sleeping or passionate ? This light hearted, simple acrylic tray, ‘vide poche’ or ‘objet d’art’ will tell you how it is.

Referencing the iconic family amusement and Christmas cracker gift the Fortune Teller Fish and combining it with the multifaceted symbol of the hand, in this case Sebastian used a caricatured outline of his own. Arriving just in time for the festive season, it is an object that gives us a moment to reflect on the year passed and the year to come.

Jealous – moving fingers
Happy – moving palm
In love – curling fingers and palm
Fickle – curling sides
Silly – turns over
Sleeping – motionless
Passionate – curls up

Each Hand is cut from acrylic and hand formed by Sebastian Bergne. As a result there can be slight variations in the curling form of each piece. They are packaged in a cotton bag and has a numbered and signed certificate of authenticity.

Hand of fortune is a first edition of 50 by Sebastian Bergne and is made in London. ©2020.

CANDLE BRICK – REBUILDING is a brick candle holder, made by hand, with all the qualities of this noble and humble material. CANDLE BRICK – REBUILDING presents itself in a playful and artistic way when it enters the house in varnished, enamelled, colored or not, solo or assembled by 2, 3, 15 … by you. On the occasion of this new collaboration with The Art Design Lab, Sebastian Bergne is offering an exclusive edition, created and assembled by himself.

This new project is the culmination of a period of research on the manufacture, use and exploitation of brick. This research, coupled with Sebastian Bergne’s distinctive approach to object design, challenges what we consider to be humble or noble, for building inside the home or outside.

CANDLE BRICK – REBUILDING is handcrafted using techniques in a historic factory on the Thames in London. Locally sourced clay is shaped using a simple wooden mold. After drying the bricks for two weeks under carefully controlled conditions, they are fired at around one thousand degrees over 24 hours. Three days of cooling follow before the oven can finally reveal the bricks. Variations in color and texture are due to slight fluctuations in temperature in the large oven and the artisanal nature of the process. As a result, each brick is clearly unique. It is certain that brick is one of the most durable and efficient building materials, as raw material, production process, use, reuse and ultimately recycling.

Sebastian Bergne‘s approach to the project started with the idea of a production resource. The idea of valuing and developing the use of this traditional artisanal process on a large scale was essential. The first result of the project is the CANDLE BRICK a simple object inspired by the brick itself. CANDLE BRICK respects this historic craft, and offers new opportunities for this normally highly categorized manufacturing industry.

Result of a new post-containment research session and on the occasion of a new collaboration, Studio Sebastian Bergne and The Art Design Lab present CANDLE BRICK-REBUILDING: a new edition of 500 candlesticks in brick, varnished, glazed, colored, from November 4 to 30, 2020, as well as an exclusive edition on the website www.theartdesignlab.com.

CANDLE BRICK – REBUILDING is the ideal gift to give or to offer yourself to illuminate an office, living room, bedroom in a unique version or through a real artistic composition. It is the perfect symbol to “build” or recreate a bond with our friends, our family, our colleagues or clients, add poetry to our spaces, embellish our daily life, for Christmas.
