Chafik Studio

France

Chafik is an architect, designer and scenographer born in Algiers, living and working in Paris
Since Chafik Studio created in 2004, he has directed the design of hotels, shops, furniture and lighting, and is carrying out a broader reflection on the strategy of luxury brands. His dreamlike approach combines purity and sensuality, intuition and reflection. He has a particular attachment to movement and light.
Chafik began his career as a furniture designer. His first pieces of furniture created for the Inner Universe earned him the grand prize of criticism at the furniture fair in 1992. We owe him in particular the redesign of the square / bistro chair for Moulin-Galland, now FERMOB, or the Ying armchair for Hugues Chevalier, which continues to decorate the official reception rooms of the Matignon Hotel.
In 1996, SEPHORA entrusted him with the management of the megastore project on the Champs-Elysées and offered him the artistic direction of the brand. For 7 years, Chafik participated in its global development. From the year 2000, Chafik also collaborated with the brands DIOR, GALLIANO, KENZO, DOM PERIGNON, GUERLAIN, GIVENCHY, EBEL.
In 2004, the French National Assembly awarded him the Talent Prize for the Success of Frenchmen from far away.
Between 2005 and 2008, Chafik established his studio between Algiers and Paris and participated in the design or realization of several projects in Algeria, including the MAMA (Museum of Modern Art of Algiers), the noble floors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , as well as the development of the Place des Martyrs or the urban reflection on the development of the Bay of Algiers.
MAMA devotes a retrospective to him in 2008.
In 2007 he was appointed first artistic director of the Baccarat house. He perfected his conception of light there and developed projects combining know-how and technology. Chafik created the first concept of Baccarat hotel that will serve as a reference for the development of the Baccarat hotel in New York. For its exceptional projects, the brand continues to call on Chafik’s creative force. In 2019, for the Meritus tower in Beijing, he delivers the Trilogy: the largest light installation in the history of Baccarat, combining more than 4,800 lights which extend over 90 linear meters and over a height of up to 18 meters.
He has also collaborated with Lancôme for almost ten years as artistic director of retail and the brand’s first flagship store on the Champs-Élysées. He also designs iconic products: Rouge Absolu lipstick, Hypnôse mascara and the latest multi-award-winning bottle of Idôle perfume.
Eco-responsibility is central to the thinking led by Chafik. Already in 2005, the Hôtel du Désert reflected its commitment to the environment. A bioclimatic, biodegradable and completely autonomous architectural creation living in harmony with the surrounding desert. Both a hotel and a spa, this haven of well-being offers a radical and contemporary experience in harmony with nature and Berber culture.
And more recently, with his multidisciplinary team, he is developing a triple zero house model (zero emissions, zero consumption and zero waste) combining luxury and ecology, the first prototype of which will be erected on a beach in Comporta, south of Lisbon.
